Liddle syndrome is a genetic condition causing early and severe high blood pressure (hypertension). While some individuals may not experience symptoms beyond hypertension, particularly as children, the condition can lead to serious cardiovascular complications like heart disease and stroke if left untreated.
Besides hypertension, individuals with Liddle syndrome may also exhibit low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia). Hypokalemia can manifest as muscle weakness or pain, tiredness, constipation, or an irregular heartbeat. Furthermore, low potassium can cause metabolic alkalosis, increasing the blood's pH level.
Liddle syndrome follows an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern, meaning only one copy of the mutated gene is needed in each cell to cause the disorder.
