Myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy is an uncommon condition marked by enlarged muscles and decreased body fat. Individuals with this condition can possess up to double the normal amount of muscle tissue. They typically exhibit enhanced muscle strength. Notably, myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy is not associated with any known health issues, and those affected have typical intellectual abilities.
The inheritance pattern of myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy follows incomplete autosomal dominance. Individuals who inherit a mutated version of the MSTN gene on both chromosomes (homozygous) display a considerable increase in muscle mass and strength. Those who inherit a mutated version on only one chromosome (heterozygous) also exhibit increased muscle mass, although to a smaller extent.
